Importance

Who are these students? Let's take a closer look at what they're like...

"Bilingual speech-language pathologist Dr. Cárdenas-Hagan discusses effective assessment and instruction strategies for ELLS with learning disabilities and ways to help encourage the active involvement of parents of ELLs with LD in their kid's schools."

Over and Under Identification

LET'S THINK!
What nationalities can students who are learning English as a New Language and have a disability be?
  • Patterns of Difficulty
  • Evaluation/Screening
  • Adjust Strategies
  • Find Progress

The two biggest issues of helping students who have disabilities and are ENL students are over identification and under identification. These misdiagnoses can put students in the wrong educational program and ultimately jeopardize their learning opportunities like a domino effect. Students who do not have a learning disability are placed into special education programs, when they actually don’t need them. Some schools have trouble separating the difference between a language barrier and an actual learning disability. On the other hand, students who are under identified do not receive the services needed for their special needs. These students do not receive the support they need and as a result fall behind in their educational progression. This is why the identification process of these students is so vital.
